Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on the 24th of August 1972 at Long Beach California. DuVernay was inspired to follow her passion of art by DuVernay's aunt Denise at the age of a small child. Aunt Denise worked in the evening shift as nurse to ensure she could indulge her passion for art literature and theater throughout the day. The aunt introduced DuVernay the 1961 movie West Side Story and DuVernay became enthralled by the film. DuVernay realized that art could be an effective tool for promoting social activism. DuVernay learned to be socially mindful by her mother. DuVernay was a resident of Compton throughout her youth, however she would spend every summer with her extended family members in Lowndes County Alabama. DuVernay's father recalled watching the historical civil rights marches through the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the neighboring city of Selma Alabama. DuVernay was inspired by her summers in Alabama to inspire her future film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In 1990 DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. Following graduation, DuVernay enrolled in the University of California Los Angeles and graduated with degrees in English and African American study. DuVernay discovered a passion for broadcast journalism as a student. She worked as a CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembered being told to look at the trash of the home of a juror. DuVernay was dissatisfied with the journalism assignments she was assigned and chose to move into the public relations industry. DuVernay started her career as a junior assistant to publicity in a tiny film studio, right after graduating from college. The DuVernay Agency is her first agency for public relations.
